- Abstract
- This study investigates how The Women’s Art World (WAW) mother artist group transforms artistic practice through reciprocal mentoring, a practice informed by engaged pedagogy (hooks, 1994) and co-mentoring (McGuire & Reger, 2003). Using narrative inquiry methodology (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000; Ford, 2021; Kim, 2016; McClish-Boyd & Bhattacharya, 2021; McCormack, 2004; Polkinghorne, 1988; Riessman, 1993) with the collaborative data analysis “storying stories” (Ford, 2021; McCormack, 2004), I ask what it means to [re]-conceive art education pedagogical practices in ways that are similar to the WAW mother artist group approach of generating a collaborative community of artistically-focused reciprocal mentorships. In this study, I utilize a matricentric feminist theoretical framework (O’Reilly, 2021) to examine the artistic conceptualizations of “normative motherhood” (O’Reilly, 2021) and theorize how WAW mother artists enact “empowered mothering” (O’Reilly, 2021) to reimagine art sites that support artists who identify as mothers and reconcile alleged tensions of dichotomous constructs of mother and/or identities.
