This project focuses on a revision of English 97 around the theme Cultural
Impacts on Education. English 97 is a combined reading/writing pre-college composition
course that is part of Green River College’s accelerated English curriculum designed to
get students college-ready within one quarter. This revision of the course’s theme sought
to internationalize the curriculum, as 85-95% of students in this course are immigrant and
international students and the previous curriculum focused entirely on U.S.
perspectives. In revising this curriculum, the researcher created a two-part structure in which
students first read and discuss various perspectives about the course theme, Cultural Impacts
on Education, and then turn to writing and researching about this topic as it relates to them
personally. The goal is to build reading and writing skills while also helping the students
connect their experiences as learners to our college’s educational culture.
