Abstract
As patient outreach over mobile phones gets more prevalent and successful, it also draws the attention of cybercriminals who aim to perform phishing attacks and impersonate healthcare facilities for fraud.
In this study, we propose a patient outreach system that is both secure and inclusive to all patients, including those who only own feature phones that do not support smartphone apps. The proposed system utilizes only the existing phone call systems and text messaging services to make patients capable of verifying the authenticity of a received text message from a healthcare facility. We also investigate the trade-offs between security and usability to develop a practical solution for use in a real-world healthcare facility.
