Abstract
A funder is a person or an organization that provides money to pay for research. Funders are essential for research, but sometimes research produces misleading outcomes due to a funder’s interest. This project aims to design and develop the “WhoFundedIt” web application to visualize the funder information for each research project in a list of scientific publications. First, I designed the minimum viable product, the simplest version of the application. Then, I identified four technology stacks and analyzed their pros and cons. I implemented the technology stack based on the Shiny framework. The input for my “WhoFundedIt” app prototype is the Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) of publications, and its output is funder data from Crossref. In the future, I will add additional funder data sources, visualizations, and more input and output formats options. The “WhoFundedIt” web application will be a useful tool to help with funder transparency and identifying potential sources of bias.
