Abstract
A funder is a person or an organization that provides money to pay for research. Funders are essential for research, but sometimes research has misleading outcomes due to a funder’s interest. This project aims to design and develop the “WhoFundedIt” web application to visualize the funder information for each research project in a list of scientific publications. First, I’m designing the simplest version of the application: its input is publications that have DOIs and its output is funder data from Crossref. Later, we will add additional data sources that can be used to retrieve funder data and more options for input and output formats. My design process starts by identifying different technology stacks and analyzing their pros and cons. Then, I will choose the most useful one for implementation. Our future work will be to implement the simplest version of the application using our chosen technology stack. The “WhoFundedIt” web application will be a useful tool to help with funder transparency and identifying potential sources of bias.
