Abstract
While Zhou Yi’s art songs have gained popularity in competitions and recitals, few
studies have critically examined the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures in his works. This
essay aims to address this gap by providing a detailed analysis of three representative songs from
his newly published song collection. It explores these selected pieces from the perspectives of
ancient poetry principles and background, tonality and harmony, and Chinese musical and
cultural elements. These examples illustrate how Zhou Yi, as a Chinese-American composer,
integrates his deeply rooted traditional culture with the knowledge he acquired in the West, and
is committed to promoting Chinese art song. By introducing this analytical method, I strive to
stimulate further interest in this genre, provide performers with more comprehensive and
nuanced interpretations, and assist them in better conveying the text and emotions to their
audiences.
