Abstract
In June of 2022, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Library migrated its long-lived institutional repository, IDEALS, onto shared-storage infrastructure centered on our bit-level preservation system, the Medusa Collection Registry. This involved writing new repository software to replace a customized version of DSpace 5. This was possible since our shared infrastructure supports our digital library platform as well as our data repository, giving us a wealth of reusable software libraries and developer experience to draw from. This presentation will cover the technical, administrative, and service-based reasons for this approach to our migration, major changes to the repository structure and metadata model, and our efforts to use the migration as an opportunity to improve interoperability between Illinois’ scholarly communication systems and services, and to make IDEALS more accessible and intuitive.
