Abstract
This study introduces Mao-Shuen Chen (b. 1936), an influential Taiwanese contemporary
composer and music educator, and his compositional styles through a theoretical and
pedagogical analysis of four of his piano sonatas. With the aim of assisting pianists in teaching
and performing Chen’s piano sonatas, an analysis of four of his seventeen piano sonatas provides
insight into his compositional styles and performance practice through a study of his writings
alongside a personal interview.
After an introduction to the project in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 provides Chen’s background
information and his compositional techniques. Chapter 3 presents the theoretical and structural
analysis of four of Chen’s piano sonatas. Practice suggestions for Chen’s piano sonatas are
included in Chapter 4—followed by a conclusion in Chapter 5.
