- Abstract
- Inspired by the film Everything Everywhere All At Once (EEAAO), this multimodal artifact illustrates complex themes from my research. The purpose of my research is to explore the history of Asian representation and understand its impact on contemporary problems in the Hollywood film industry. Furthermore, this artifact investigates solutions to these issues and highlights the films that have found success. The problems are depicted through a variety of materials, including an acrylic sheet, watercolor, fine liner ink pen, birch wood, and glue. The shattered acrylic within the old television represents the struggle to break free from Asian American discrimination and misrepresentation in Hollywood. However, the motifs of the googly eyes and bagels scattered across the television reference the profound theme of hope in EEAAO, which parallels the perpetual fight for representation in Hollywood. Additionally, the earthy yellow hues, in contrast to the primary tones on the screen, represent the clash of Asian representation and media. As an Asian American film student, seeing films such as EEAAO sweep the Oscars against all odds highlights that history can change and reconstructs the statistically and racially motivated expectations of success in Asian American centered films.
