- Abstract
- At first glance, one might think, "What is that odd object inserted into that sheep's abdomen, or is that sheep okay?" The answers to these questions lie in the significance of the foreign object inserted into the sheep's abdomen. My research, mentored by a graduate student, focuses on what lies behind the foreign orange item called a cannula. Cannulas allow scientists to study and analyze an animal's digestive system. More specifically, my research focuses on rumen digestibility, a ruminant animal's most significant stomach component. The study of ruminant animals is essential from a livestock production, health, and welfare standpoint, as ruminants are at high risk for acidosis. Acidosis in sheep occurs when a large amount of grain is consumed, releasing carbohydrates and fermented more rapidly than digested. Acidosis may impact rumen pH, a measure of acidity and function. Testing the rumen fluid in vitro allows us to understand this potential relationship better and what influences it has on the digestibility in the rumen.
