Abstract
Although trauma has been examined in the context of schizotypy, the role of race-based traumatic stress in the development and expression of schizotypy is a nascent area of study. Research examining the relationship between the frequency of racial discrimination and psychotic experiences has found significant, positive associations; however, no studies to our knowledge have examined adverse emotional and psychological responses to racism (also known as race-based traumatic stress) and its association with psychotic experiences among People of Color. The present study examined the relationship between racial trauma and experiences of psychosis among People of Color living in the United States. In a sample of 298 college students in the South and Midwest, our team found associations of trauma, racial discrimination, and racial trauma with multidimensional schizotypy. The magnitude and direction of these associations differed depending on racial or ethnic groups. Future research must examine these relationships using larger sample sizes and more advanced statistical methods.
