Abstract

My research project investigates the usefulness of the Crossref registry in retrieving funding information about research works. Research is often supported by third parties, “funders”, who donate resources including funds to researchers conducting the study. Sometimes, these funds can be used as a motivating factor to sway the outcome of research. As such, awareness of who funded research is imperative, providing clarity on the relationship between researchers and funders. Unfortunately, it is not easy to compile funding information. Research works cite funding information in a variety of ways and in a variety of places throughout their works. Crossref is a scholarly data infrastructure that, among other features, compiles funding information from research works. My goal is to evaluate how useful Crossref is to retrieve funding information about various research works. I intend to test the tool with an array of research works with various degrees of available metadata, including DOIs, author last name, title, and publication date. The outcome of my research will be funding data found for the input research works, along with a statistical analysis of how much funding data Crossref was able to retrieve. I will also generate a visualization of funders and the works they funded.
