Abstract
The purpose of this paper is three-folded. First, it aims to analyze one of the most significant events in the aviation industry of US labor union history that resulted in a catastrophic breakdown of collective bargaining—the PATCO (Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization) strike of 1981. In this effort, the paper discusses the causes of the strike, what went wrong during that timeline, and the massive consequences that the aviation industry and the nation agonized. Second, the paper analyzes the macro-level impact of the PATCO strike of 1981 from various perspectives, including the impact on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and PATCO labor union, economic impact, social impact, political impact, and human resource impact. Lastly, the paper offers timely suggestions for HR professionals of the 21st century by articulating how they can better work together with labor unions for mutual benefits and smooth operations of the organization. Lessons from this historical event can help HR managers better understand the dynamics of complex relations with labor unions, thus, ensuring fair dealings and mutual benefits for the organization and its workers. The paper should be useful to any HR professionals dealing with labor unions—especially in the aviation industry.
