Abstract

A diversity of culturally-relevant and contextually-appropriate frameworks is needed to support community and publicly engaged scholarship. This paper argues that positioning rural library professionals as brokers of engineering learning through research-practice partnership and co-design can be one framework for designing culturally-relevant rural engineering programs. Hav-ing abundant information sources, experiences, social connections, and insti-tutions, rural libraries are ripe with opportunities for brokering learning. However, while rural library professionals are experts in connecting children with library-based resources, they may experience knowledge gaps and chal-lenges when providing engineering programs. This paper describes how re-search-practice partnership and co-design can support rural library profes-sionals to enhance library-based resources for engineering learning and bro-ker new engineering-relevant and engineering-specific resources to develop culturally-relevant engineering programs in rural communities.
