Abstract

Patient portals are considered the health information technology highly adopted by the health care sectors. With the elaboration of health infor-mation technology, patients are provided with online applications to access health care services through patient portals. Although the government is in-vesting in patient portal adoption, usage remains low. According to prior studies, emerging adults lack self-management and have less awareness of using patient portals. To further enhance emerging adults’ self-management and engagement with patient portals, this study investigates the factors af-fecting their intentions to use patient portals. A combination of the Technol-ogy Acceptance Model and perceived risk theory is used to develop a new research model. The model is assessed using an online survey examining emerging adults' intentions to use patient portals. The research identifies per-ceived risks associated with the use of patient portals and proposes imple-mentation strategies to enhance usage behavior.
