- Abstract
- This poster reports the working progress of proposing and testing a measurement of cultural influences in health information behaviors, the “Cultural Character Scale,” as part of a research project that investigate the impact of cultural differences on immigrants’ health information practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed unique challenges in seeking quality health information to address health concerns and support decision-making for the general public, and more so for the immigrant population in the US, as they often face mixed or contrasting messages regarding the virus and the pandemic from their native country and residing country. To support the cross-cultural comparison of the health information practices and decisions of Chinese immigrants in the US, native US, native Chinese, and other immigrants in the US, an instrument specific to the setting of information seeking is essential to explore the factor of cultural differences. The proposed “Cultural Character Scale (CCS)” consisted of 20 pairs of statements that cover different cultural dimensions that correspond to different aspects of information-seeking behaviors. The CCS was incorporated in the survey as self-rating questions to produce an overall score representing one’s cultural inclination. Preliminary data suggested that there are statistically significant differences between different groups’ CCS scores. Its impact on and relationships with other variables will be further investigated.
