- Abstract
- The current study assessed the feasibility of a novel approach, the See and Say Sequence, in which caregivers learned an integrated set of language strategies in a single intervention session. We aimed to understand if caregivers could learn to use the See and Say Sequence and measure the impacts this had on the responsive and linguistic features of caregiver input. Fourteen parent-child dyads (child age range 15-24 months) were taught the See and Say Sequence during a brief caregiver-implemented intervention session (M=18.98 minutes, SD=2.65 minutes) using the Teach-Model-Coach-Review instructional process. Parent-child language samples were used to measure change in caregiver input following intervention. Specifically, caregivers’ use of the three See and Say Sequence components, total number of utterances, and mean turn length were analyzed using descriptive and t test analyses. Following intervention, caregivers significantly increased their use of the three See and Say Sequence components (all t(13) > 5.24, all p < .001). Further, they significantly decreased total number of utterances (t(13) =3.22, p=.007) and mean turn length (t(13)=3.31, p=.006). In addition, the composition of caregiver utterances changed following intervention, with substantial differences in the responsive and linguistic features of their input. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of the See and Say Sequence. We provide preliminary data that a single intervention session can have meaningful impacts on caregivers’ use of language strategies and discuss future evaluation of the See and Say Sequence as an early intervention service delivery option.
