Abstract
Chinese diasporic art song in Malaysia is a genre that has not been widely explored. It has
roots in mainland Chinese art songs. Based on my experiences as a Malaysian Chinese pianist and
vocal coach, this essay explores art songs by six past and present Malaysian Chinese composers.
Through the art songs of these composers, this discourse observes their individual experiences of
membership in the Chinese diaspora, localization, and cosmopolitanism, and serves as a musical
introduction to this genre.
