Abstract
In spring 1985, the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign
received a grant of more than $83,000 in Library Services and Construction
Act (LSCA) funds through the Illinois State Library to create and distribute
its online catalog on optical disc. The grant had several objectives. The
first was to determine whether optical disc technology and industry production
capabilities had advanced sufficiently to make it feasible to produce
a database of more than 900,000 bibliographic records on laserdisc which
could be searched by microcomputer.
