- Abstract
- This DMA thesis investigates the biomechanical concepts found in Paul Rolland’s and Yehudi Menuhin’s pedagogy on violin playing in order to apply their ideas to repertoire representing a range of styles and composers. The principal objective of my research is to demonstrate how a greater understanding of biomechanical principles can be advantageously applied to intermediate/advanced violin repertoire. I begin by highlighting the commonalities between Rolland and Menuhin’s pedagogies, showcasing how they both prioritize teaching how to play violin in the most natural and healthy way. I then classify and analyze Rolland’s and Menuhin’s descriptions on specific types of playing techniques. Finally, I draw a conclusion from this analysis and summarize the results, which will be demonstrated in my recital with the selected repertoire. Ultimately, the larger implication of this research is to provide violin players and teachers with a theoretical and practical basis for violin playing. When adapted, these ideas will eventually help to improve playing techniques and healthy performance reducing injuries or pain.
