- Abstract
- Linear Jazz Improvisation Strategies for the Developing Big Band is a resource to assist high school band directors to teach intermediate-level linear jazz improvisation. This project will help to equip members of the jazz ensemble with the necessary tools for successful jazz improvisations in upcoming concerts and competitions. This and the accompanying textbook will provide jazz improvisation materials, rehearsal techniques and practice strategies for big band. It is presented in a classroom format with individual parts for jazz ensemble and is intended to be used during jazz band rehearsal time. These five areas of study, Music Theory, Scale Studies, Song Studies, Vamp Studies, and the ii7-V7-I is an introduction to jazz improvisation materials and how to use them in a jazz solo. They are presented in unison and in twelve keys with introductory accompaniment piano and guitar voicings, bass lines, drum rhythms, and background phrases for the ensemble. There is an Instruction Manual for Band Directors in APPENDIX A. In addition, there are concert parts for the textbook in APPENDIX B.
