- Abstract
- This thesis explores four different compositions for clarinet based on traditional Korean music composed by world-renowned contemporary Korean composers. These include Isang Yun’s Riul (1968), Younghi Pagh-Paan’s Ta-Ryong V (1996), Geon-Yong Lee’s Song in The Dusk I (1997), and Namlim Lee’s Sanjo (2016). Their compositions are researched by many musicians in Korea, China, Japan, and Europe and based on the perspectives of Western music theory. However, this paper explores their compositions as they relation to traditional Korean music history and theory. In order to provide a traditional Korean musical approach to each composition, this thesis gives a brief background of the Korean musical history of rhythms and modes. This approach considers the perspective of a performer aiming to understand and overcome challenges by giving specific performance ideas and practical guides for each composition. Due to the aim of the project’s emphasis on performance specifics, this scholarly topic is first presented in recital, followed by this paper that provides detailed explanations of compositional characteristics and the performance of important examples from each composition.
