- Abstract
- This study chronologically examines five piano compositions inspired by Peking Opera: Ba Ban and the Waves of Xiang Jiang (1915) by Yuanren Zhao (1892-2982), Piano Accompanied Legend of the Red Lantern (1972) by Chengzong Yin (1941-), Four Etudes (1979) by Hongjin Ni (1935-), Pi Huang (2013) by Zhao Zhang (1964-), and Sheng Dan Jing Mo Chou (2007) by A-Mao Wang (1986-). The aim is to provide a historical view of their stylistic differences by examining the compositional tools and artistic decisions chosen at different times and providing historical and musical information on Peking Opera. Qupai, Sheng Qiang, Ban Shi, and role types are interlocking musical concepts of Peking Opera necessary to understand the musical construct of a Peking Opera and any composition inspired by it. These elements are explained and demonstrated in detail in the selected piano compositions.
