Abstract
The diverse racial makeup of the U.S. military is one of its greatest assets. To broaden equal opportunity, each branch of service has to be committed to removing prejudice and bias and fostering an environment in which every service member is treated with dignity and respect. Research suggests that awareness, accountability, and intentional, swift action contributes to a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Examined through a critical lens, this qualitative study explores how the U.S. Coast Guard and its service academy are breaking down racial barriers to help improve recruitment and retention.
The findings of this study indicate that such barriers within the Service are related to the findings of previously conducted research (DoD Board Report on Diversity and Inclusion, 2020; USCG Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, 2020). Recommendations include taking a critical approach to understanding historical and or/institutional racial inequities, implementing D&I education programs, and using survey data results to identify gaps and to formulate policy/action plans.
