Abstract
Since the announcement of their arrival in the online public sphere in late 2017 (Cole, 2017) deepfakes have piqued the interest of the general public, scholars, journalists, and lawmakers alike. With increasing sophistication of both the underlying deep learning technology and deepfake-making applications in the end-user marketplace, deepfake technology is now capable of producing exceedingly realistic looking fake videos rendered in high-definition (and thus signaling high fidelity). A persistent concern throughout this period of refinement of deepfake technology has been its potential detrimental impact on trust in audiovisual media created using traditional methods. The goal of this paper is to investigate the societal implications of deepfake technology.
