Abstract
Math for Liberal Arts, MTH 1000, is a survey course at Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC)
in rural north-central Illinois. Since application problems in textbooks tend to arise out of an everyday
American perspective, an international module was developed during the International Studies Research
Lab (ISRL) 2022 to provide students with an international perspective in the context of current issues.
For the module, students will research a country from Central and Eastern Europe, then apply
mathematical concepts from Set Theory and Statistics to analyze the country, make comparisons with
other regions, and explore issues related to social and environmental justice and climate change.
