- Abstract
- Wearable and earable technologies have been flourishing in the electronics industry for the past several years. Even though wearable technologies have already been dramatically changing people’s lives, they have yet to reach even a small fraction of their full potential. In this research project, we present iGlass, a smart glasses platform prototype capable of collecting and transmitting data from various sensors, enabling future researchers to easily develop APIs and applications that will bring wearable devices to the next level. The iGlass consists of several crucial hardware components, namely, a microcontroller, a variety of related sensors, and a Bluetooth low energy transmitter. Furthermore, to demonstrate the functionalities of iGlass, we have also developed several APIs that have been proven to have a significant impact on real world applications. For example, we were able to successfully integrate the head orientation tracking API into an indoor localization and navigation system, and as a result, the accuracy of the system improved as compared to estimating head orientation using a cell phone. Despite the positive results, our experience designing iGlass was not all positive either. Along the way, we have learned many lessons such as to never fully trust the functionality of open-source libraries and to never fully believe the datasheets of hardware components. Nevertheless, iGlass has matured throughout this year and we will document the important details in the rest of this paper.
