- This paper focuses on the development of an electronic mallet percussion practice tool to help increase the accessibility of affordable percussion educational devices. Using the MPU-6050 accelerometer module and I2C communication to interface with a STM32 Nucleo microcontroller, a highly accurate motion detection solution was created. A z-score peak detection algorithm used this information to compare individual data points to a running average using statistical dispersion in order to identify specific percussive events. The accelerometer refresh rate was identified as the narrowest bottleneck in the overall signal flow, and using this information, specific parameters for the peak detection algorithm were selected to maximize the accuracy of the algorithm output without sacrificing device response time. Finally, the detected peaks were used to output MIDI data, which could theoretically be used with any MIDI compatible device. This work resulted in a robust single key mallet percussion element using affordable, off the shelf components. Further development must be performed off this foundation in order to scale up this device to the full desired chromatic range.
