Abstract

Over the years microgrid concept has shown to be a promising approach to handle the disturbances in the grid. In addition, deployment of microgrids is seen as an effective way to manage, operate and control distributed energy resources (DERs). To fully understand and realize the true potential of microgrids, there is a need to perform extensive testing of microgrids and observe the responses. To this end, we propose the implementation of a realistic distribution network operated as a microgrid. This distribution network microgrid, known as the Banshee microgrid, resembles a realistic typical microgrid. Accurate modeling of the microgrid will allows us to address the challenges seen around the world in community microgrids, small islands, and industrial facilities. To gain reliable insights into the effectiveness of the microgrid implementation, we make use of the controller hardware-in-the-loop (C-HIL) testing approach. This approach enables us to ensure a very high-fidelity verification and validation analysis of the Banshee microgrid. Typhoon HIL provides the resources to perform the research in this thesis. The Banshee microgrid is modeled and implemented on the Typhoon HIL hardware devices. This thesis will focus on analyzing the Banshee microgrid implementation for reference point tracking of DERs. Furthermore, it will also start with the implementation of the Modbus communication protocol.
