- Abstract
- This gender inclusive peacebuilding unit is designed to be added to an Ethics course taught in the Philosophy Department and in the Interdisciplinary Studies department Global Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies programs at Austin Community College. This project builds on Cox's previous 2021 ISRL project peacebuilding is often considered the work of high-level international actors, such as diplomats and human rights courts. But unlike these traditional top-down approaches to peacebuilding, strategic peacebuilding is both a bottom-up and a top-down approach that creates a space for addressing the multidimensional needs of communities in a state of violence or injustice. It seeks to understand local needs and interests, eradicate structural forms of violence, and build relationships among people in all roles and levels of society. Because community colleges often bring together local government, business, non-profit, religious, grassroot, and other organizations, they are already well-positioned as strategic peacebuilding sites. However, despite a growing body of evidence showing that the most effective and long-lasting form of peacebuilding is one that systematically includes and considers the needs and interests of women and girls, women’s interests remain underrepresented in all forms of peacebuilding. Furthermore, issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) have been underrepresented in peacebuilding efforts and research. The Gender Inclusive Peacebuilding Unit is intended to inform students of strategic peacebuilding with a gender inclusive focus. It follows a nation-building ‘game’ unit where student groups attempt to ‘design the most ethical society’ while learning the tenets of distributive justice and the capabilities approach. Students will use articles, videos, and other materials to complete a final assignment where they analyze, evaluate, and synthesize the material from the game and the unit to envision ways to apply strategic peacebuilding in gender inclusive ways to a local or global conflict.
