Abstract

In August 2020, in keeping with its focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) project formed a Terminology Task Force (TTF) to review, address, and define processes to eliminate offensive terms in materials authored and published by XSEDE. Reporting to the XSEDE Senior Management Team, the TTF included members from all areas of the project. Pioneering similar efforts launched by other entities active in the advanced research computing community, the XSEDE TTF worked over the next two years to define and refine a list of problematic terms, enabling community input to this list. The TTF applied the SiteBulb tool to search thousands of pages of its materials for terms on its list, analyzed the results, and developed guidelines and recommendations for replacing them. The TTF organized training and discussion sessions for XSEDE staff, the Service Provider Forum, as well as Birds of a Feather sessions and panels at the PEARC21, PEARC22, and SC21 conferences.
