Abstract
In 1965 MIT Press published Libraries of the Future in which J. C. R. Licklider outlined his vision of procognitive systems. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of this publication, this paper discusses the role of the Council on Library Resources and its president Verner W. Clapp in funding the study, the context at Bolt Beranek and Newman in which Licklider and his colleagues completed the work, details of their reports and the resulting book, early responses to the book as documented in book reviews and citing publications, and the legacy of Licklider’s vision of procognitive systems.
