- Abstract
- The atomic structure of a material fundamentally determines its properties. In solid state chemistry, we investigate the structure-property relationships to discover and develop materials for various applications. My job is to synthesize and characterize intermetallic compounds to understand and evaluate their tunability. An example is this superconducting material. It is a metallic ingot as synthesized, however, it transforms into sheets of thin plates after heat treatment, as shown in the image. This transformation did not only change the surface morphology, but also modified its superconductivity. As superconductors become increasingly demanding for studies in physical science as well as for energy alternatives, we’re investigating the effect of this transformation to ultimately improve superconductivity.
