Abstract

Image of myself waiting in the darkness for the confocal microscope to take pictures of a neuron. Lights and computer monitors were all turned off to minimize background noise for the microscope. The colorful lights from the instrument and my cellphone timer become the only light source for me to not hit the table and induce catastrophic artifact. It takes 200-400 images and 2-4 hours of exposure time to put together a 3D image of a neuron if the first 3D image turns out to be good enough for further analysis. The timer is counting down from 3 hours 23 minutes this time. When the time is up, I will see if this neuron needs another 3 hours of photo time. Sometimes doing research is mostly waiting in the dark and hoping for a beautiful image of research.
