Abstract

Hmmm.. that’s strange…there’s a new egg in my nest. I’ve removed a cowbird egg before… last breeding season. It was small and beige with brown speckles. I knew it wasn’t mine, and I wasn’t going to allow a cowbird to trick me into raising her baby. My own babies will be plenty to raise. I decided to remove the cowbird egg by puncturing it with my beak and disposing of it in the grass somewhere far away from my nest. However… this egg is different. Foreign. It’s a darker blue than my eggs are…and smaller…and definitely wasn’t here when I left my nest to forage. I don’t want my eggs to get cold. I’ll incubate them while I decide. *An hour goes by.* Hmmm…what to do… I know this egg isn’t mine. I should remove it… I will remove it. Reject it. *The female robin gets off of her eggs and perches on a branch, locates the dark blue egg, picks it up in her beak and flies off.*
