Abstract
As Ms. Rowland, I found myself stuck in the preconceived notion that teachers are either Mr. or Ms., but as I became more comfortable claiming my identity as a gender expansive choir director, I was still “walking a treacherous tightrope, with invisibility on one side and unintelligibility on the other” (Garrison, 2018, p. 633). The title of ‘Ms.’ meant that I was a teacher and a damn good one, in fact. But with the addition of that title came the subtraction of my identity and the lowering of my confidence. Growing into my gender expansive identity has allowed me to retrospectively examine my own story. I share my story to inspire others to know that they are not alone. My story is being used to provide insight into the pain endured as Ms. Rowland and the ways that pain has been used to redeem an important part of my past in connection with my present.
