- Abstract
- During the 2020 Presidential Election, the voter fraud claim has gained attention from the politically right-wing people and is being accused of spreading misinformation, President Trump was banned from Twitter. In seeking alternative social media space, Trump followers migrated to Parler. However, as misinformation on social media mobilized people to act in the real world, people stormed the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, making the situation aggravated. I was interested in finding a discernable pattern of increasing or decreasing the homophily of the network of cross-platform users. I identified 9,371 usernames that appeared during the time window of data collection and drew the network of top 20 cross-platform users who communicated with other users on Twitter. The nodes in red are representing cross-platform users and the nodes in blue are the users who did not move to Parler. The more the user talked with others, the bigger the node became. The network shows that the big red nodes are connected with many blue nodes, implying that more heterophily while the mid-sized red nodes are connected with fewer blue nodes showing more homophily. I am excited that this network analysis may shed light on understanding how misinformation spread throughout social media!
