- Abstract
- One of the fundamental principles behind public parks and recreational spaces is that all people are welcome. Access to parks with quality programming, recreational facilities, and green spaces enrich people’s lives and bring communities together. Superkilen Park, located in Copenhagen, Denmark, is unique in its approach towards inclusivity. Made up of an assemblage of objects from over 60 countries, representing the local array of immigrant populations in Norrebro, this park tackles integration and unity in both a literal and symbolic way. Superkilen presents an opportunity for these immigrants to exist in a space without feeling the need to fit in. However, the question remains: do these passive forms of inclusivity allow them to feel more welcomed in their new environment? Superkilen’s cultural objects, implemented to represent a diverse local population, currently offer only a passive form of inclusivity. The need for active forms of inclusivity at Superkilen Park presents an opportunity to implement culturally specific programming to better engage the community of Norrebro, initiating a shift from static objects to active, time-based experiences. The image presented is the surface material of a playground structure from Japan, a black octopus slide, one of the many objects at Superkilen Park.
