- Abstract
- Asphalt binder is one of the most significant construction materials and is used in almost 95% of pavements in the United States. To better understanding the role of asphalt binder in controlling performance of pavement, other than mechanical tests, one method is to visualize the binder structure exposed to electron beam damage. The fibril structures from an unaged asphalt binder in the figure are observed using Environmental Scanning Electronic Microscope (ESEM). Under the electron beam damage, the asphalt binder structure evolves from normal state in the left-side figure, to the “fibril” state shown on the right side, where a combined webs-like fibrils form to change the structure. These types of images reveal the fundamental properties of the binder and can be directly related to performance, which is the objective of this research.
