Abstract

My short journey to South China in late 2016 remained as a constant reminder of the great transformation that has taken place in Shenzhen, now dubbed as China's Silicon Valley. As a first-time visitor to once known as a quiet and remote fishing village across the border of Hong Kong, I was very much surprised and speechless to find not gray factory buildings but a global innovation metropolis and knowledge-based industries that continue to drive the city's development. I remember vividly counting the number of tall buildings rising from the earth. I simply marveled at the scope and speed of the transformation that was taking place in China. As I pondered all I observed, I made a firm decision to have a first-hand experience about the culture and amazing growth story that has been propelling China from once one of the poorest territories in the world to the top of the First World in only a couple decade.
