- Abstract
- The blue and black belly of the Harlequin Mantella Frog (Mantella cowanii) is like a fingerprint. No two frogs have the same pattern of spots. By photographing each frog caught during surveys, I can differentiate individuals and use statistical models to estimate how many are left in the wild. I also take a small tissue sample from one toe for genetic analyses. This photograph was taken near the village Antoetra in Madagascar, which is one of only four places where Harlequin Mantella Frogs still occur. How many frogs remain at each site? Are populations increasing, decreasing, or stable? Is there enough genetic diversity remaining within populations for long-term viability? By answering these and other research questions, I hope to inform conservation efforts for the species and help prevent its extinction.
