- Abstract
- You can radically tune an organic semiconductor molecule, but you cannot tuna fish. My research studied the crystals of a molecule which forms 5 different structures depending on how the molecules are arranged. The artistic rendering here captures the diverse crystal structures formed through 3D representations of the repeating unit cells and, much like pressing different keys on a piano, we can tune the electronic properties by 5 orders of magnitude. While organic electronics offer the opportunity for flexible and low cost printed electronics, Understanding the emergence of these electronic properties as a result of molecular assembly is critical to designing new devices ranging such as wearable sensors. Control over these crystal structures provides new ways of easily tuning the function of these devices, so while they may not be waterproof for fish – Yet! – organic semiconductors have come a long way towards cheap, printable electronics.
