- Abstract
- Currently, fungal pathogens are gaining importance due to the surge in the number of people infected despite their immune status. They are not just limited to skin and hair but can invade the body affecting vital organs like lung. In the image, I show the microscopic section of normal lung tissue with clear air filled spaces known as alveoli and infected lung tissue by a primary lung pathogen ‘Blastomyces dermatitidis’ suggesting how bad a lung is damaged filling up the normal air spaces with the product of tissue reactions and themselves in innumerable number (magnified inset) affecting respiration and leading to death. Although, the frontline soldiers of our body- “neutrophils and macrophages”, protect us from these deadly pathogens by engulfing it, some may escape and multiply as the temperature inside our body is conducive. It is hard to believe that there are no approved fungal vaccines and treatment costing a bomb with poor prognosis despite medical advances. My research is to aid development of vaccine by focusing on identifying peptide components present in these intruders capable of eliciting protective immune response. ‘Prevention is better than cure’- fits perfectly as one does not want to imagine their lungs with ‘Blastomyces dermatitidis’.
