Abstract

This is what long-term partnership between UIUC and Njala University, Sierra Leone, looks like to me. Over the course of a decade, Professor Richard Cooke (ABE) has taught classes, mentored students, and designed agricultural engineering solutions for Njala University and surrounding communities. Njala University has hosted students like me who come for the experience of traveling for research or for study abroad. I love this type of experience because I get to see new places and form connections with and learn from the people there. There is so much beauty everywhere in this world! But those who travel also need a place to rest. Sometimes the unfamiliar is overwhelming, and sometimes the work tires us out. Whatever the reason rest is needed, the ability to find it can make or break a travel experience and the quality of research that can be done. I found an oasis of refuge every time I needed it, thanks to the deep ties between Dr. Cooke and Njala University. This is how the biggest, most long-lasting impacts are made.
