- Abstract
- The diversity that is present throughout our world has created a multitude of societal and cultural implications for women. While the patriarchy and patriarchal values are prevalent on a large and worldwide scale, specific cultures perpetuate these ideas in a different manner that imposes barriers outside of the home. Conforming to certain patriarchal standards does not dissolve a woman from the negative connotations or actions that men employ against them. Actions and comments belittling the existence/roles of women are the norms; even encouraged by other males and young boys to partake in. These negative actions do not stop at words, where encounters that involve women often turn into violent and physical scenarios. The patriarchy, toxic masculinity, and misogyny are universal practices against women. One unique dimension of this revolves around cultural implications, which dictate was is good and what is bad in a specific culture. In consideration of these vast differences and cultural norms, Latino culture and Latin American countries have a particular history with how they perpetuate these mindsets. The culture continues to employ toxic masculinity and misogyny through generations, often continuing cycles of violence and abuse through this. The term “Machismo” has been coined in the culture to describe these mannerisms regarding women. The continued existence of this has transcended into the larger, more physical, and harmful matters. The motive behind this research is to study machismo and how it has defined a culture throughout generations. Additionally, it is imperative to study the relationship machismo has to physical forms of gender-based violence. Still and all, the area of Latin America is diverse within itself, yet machismo is still prevalent throughout the area but perceived in different ways. Despite this, machismo is a matter that has had the same catastrophic outcomes; feminicides and oppression. The question I pose to readers is how has the prevalence of Machismo in Latin American Cultures/Countries led to the rise in femicides?
