Abstract
Internet content providers often deliver contents though bandwidth bottlenecks that are not controlled by both the content providers and the end-users. We find that such bandwidth limits often affect multiple users of the same content provider, and that content provider often have users with disparate revenue potential. With this disparate user revenue potential, a content provider could shift some of its downstream bandwidth from certain flows to others to increase its aggregated revenue. In this paper, we designed vAlloc, a bandwidth allocation framework for content providers to dynamically allocate bandwidth among co-bottlenecked users based on the revenue potential. We instantiate vAlloc in video streaming applications and get improvement of total revenue in both simulations and Internet experiments.
