Abstract

This poster presents the preliminary findings on Chinese celebrity fans’ in-formation creating behaviors on the Weibo platform, which is one aspect of a research exploring these fans’ online information behaviors and understandings of their fandom. As celebrity fans conduct abundant information activities influencing mainstream culture, this research challenges their still-existing “brainless” stereotype through investigating two musical ac-tors Ayanga and Yunlong Zheng’s fans’ representative information behavior types, motivations, meanings, and influences. Unobtrusive observation and semi-structured interviews have produced preliminary results that fans’ celebrity-related information creating behaviors on Weibo—posting, re-posting, commenting, direct messaging—show clear patterns and logics. Being critical and knowledgeable about their behaviors, fans create content to express their personal emotions, connect to other fans, and support their celebrities and communities. Discussions and implications on fans’ ration-ales signify more in-depth investigations on how fans negotiate boundaries, promote beliefs, build communities, and perceive and exchange information in digital environments.
