Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to promote these works and the entire body of repertoire commissioned by F-PLUS, as well as general interest in percussionists performing and commissioning chamber works with non-percussionists. These works are all valuable additions to the repertoire and deserve additional performances outside of F-PLUS. This thesis explores the repertoire of the violin/clarinet/percussion trio F-PLUS, using five representative works from our repertoire as examples. It first gives an overview of the history of chamber works for percussion and non-percussion instruments to contextualize these works within a broader history of mixed chamber music. The five works chosen to explore the trio’s repertoire are Kevin Puts’ And Legions Will Rise (2001), Christopher Stark’s Borrowed Chords (2010, rev. 2017), Liza Sobel Crane’s Trio for Clarinet, Violin, and Percussion (2018), Matthew Barnson’s Sempre Dolce (2019), and Jessie Montgomery’s Trio (2020). With the exception of the Puts and the Stark, all of the works were commissioned by and written for F-PLUS(the Stark was arranged by myself for marimba from its original piano version). The performance guide section of this thesis will explore specific challenges within each work, discussing ensemble issues, mallet and instrument choices, and techniques required to perform each piece successfully. Following is a discussion of the commissioning methods used to help create these works, as well as others in F-PLUS’ repertoire.
