Abstract
This study provides a better understanding of the integration of visual, audio, and performative elements in multimedia. The primary significance of this project is to expose a new perspective for multimedia analysis that more fully considers all performing bodies. I consider analytical lenses of Nicholas Cook, Ryan Olivier, and Michel Chion as a starting point to better understand this media integration. Specifically, I discuss the importance of equalizing the multimedia hierarchy in analysis and the importance of the body in performance as discussed by Nina Sun Eidsheim and Arnie Cox. I then establish terminology for analyzing musical multimedia and apply these concepts to analyses of Natacha Diels’ 35 Degrees, Pamela Z’s Attention, and my own work Stay. These analyses illustrate how examining the instrumentalist in relation to the other audio-visual elements, as an equally influential performing body, clarify the role of the body and deepen our understanding of multimedia art.
