- Abstract
- This thesis discusses and compares the classical and jazz approaches to embouchure, tongue position, oral cavity, jaw use, and a limited discussion on equipment to aid a college level classical saxophonist in developing a convincing jazz tonal concept. Included in this discussion is an emphasis on the importance of jazz saxophone listening and transcription with the intention of helpful development of tone replication in a jazz context. Accompanying this discussion will be pedagogical exercises to aid in the process of transitioning within each technical aspect of embouchure, tongue position, oral cavity, and jaw use from a classical approach to a jazz approach in jazz tonal concept development.
